Law & Order situation at its nadir in Punjab: Harpal Cheema

Jalandhar / Kapurthala, May 16, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab senior and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema, terming the law and order situation in the state as worrisome, said that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who also held the additional charge of Ministry of Home, had been away from his office for long spells of time due to which the law and order situation had gone for a toss in the state.

He said the criminals were upbeat and calling the shots in running all kinds of mafias in Punjab under the protective patronage of the political god fathers and bureaucracy, adding that the undue political interference in the police administration had led to breed rampant corruption in the system and pushing those helming it to criminal tendencies.

The shooting of two young international Kabaddi players of Lakhan Ke Pada (Bhulath) village by an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI), in which one had died on the spot while other was grievously injured, was the recent example of the criminal trend catching up with the police.

Cheema on Saturday, along with other leaders of the party, reached Lakhan Ke Pada village in Kapurthala district to pay his respects to the slain Kabaddi player Arvinderjit Singh (25) and enquire about the well-being of the injured Pradeep Singh. Others who accompanied him included senior party leaders Gary Baring, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Harchand Singh Bursat, Dr. Malwinder Mali, Navdeep Singh Sangha, Gurinderjit Singh Pavla, Jasvir Singh Raja Gill, Lucky Randhawa, Mahinder Singh Sarpanch, Kewal Singh Padda, Lovdeep Singh Gill and Balwant Bhatia.

The LoP offered his condolences to the bereaved family of Kabaddi player and demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the deceased Arvinderjit Singh and a government job for the injured player Pradeep Singh. Cheema also demanded the filing of a challan against the accused policeman within 10 days and a court trial completed within three months.

Taking a swipe at Captain Amarindr Singh, Cheema said that since the Chief Minister was not capable of doing justice to the sensitive Home Department, he should demit office sooner than later so that a competent hand could be given the reins to take due care of the crippled law and order machinery in the state.
