Kejriwal meets Stalin to seek support on Ordinance issue

Chandigarh/New Delhi/Tamil Nadu, June 1, 2023 (Yes Punjab News)
AAP National Convenor and Delhi CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal’s campaign against Modi Government’s ‘anti-Delhi’ ordinance is gaining massive strength with the support of opposition parties. After JD(U), RJD, TMC, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, BRS and the Left Bloc, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has extended its support to the campaign. Shri Arvind Kejriwal visited Chennai on Thursday to meet with Tamil Nadu CM and DMK President Thiru MK Stalin. CM Stalin assured that his party will vote against the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha and work towards its defeat.

Expressing his gratitude for CM Thiru MK Stalin’s support, CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the unjust actions of the BJP-led Central Government. He emphasised that despite the people of Delhi fighting for eight long years to secure justice, the Supreme Court’s verdict in their favour was overturned by the BJP within just eight days. He denounced the Centre’s ordinance as undemocratic, unconstitutional, and against the federal structure of the nation.

The Delhi CM further revealed that their campaign has been receiving a favourable response from political parties across India. With each passing day, his confidence grows, and he believes that they will successfully defeat the bill.

He emphasised that the outcome of this battle in the Rajya Sabha will serve as a crucial semi-final to the 2024 elections, delivering a powerful message that the united opposition stands against the Modi Government. Punjab CM Sardar Bhagwant Mann, MP Shri Sanjay Singh, MP Shri Raghav Chadha, Delhi Minister Ms Atishi were also present in the meeting along with DMK leaders Thiru TR Balu and Ms Kanimozhi.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome received, CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the purpose of the meeting — discussing the recent ordinance issued by the central government. This ordinance threatens to undermine the hard-fought victory of the people of Delhi in the Supreme Court that came after eight years of legal struggle, the CM said.

On 11th May 2023, the Supreme Court issued a revolutionary order in favour of the people of Delhi, explaining the importance of an elected government’s authority to govern. Recognising the elected government’s thumping majority, the court affirmed that control over services and bureaucrats is vital for effective governance. The court directed that the elected government should have full and direct control over services and bureaucrats, ensuring that all powers lie with the elected government.

However, on 19th May 2023, right after the Supreme Court went on vacation, the BJP government at the Centre passed an ordinance at 10:00 PM, nullifying and disrespecting the Supreme Court’s order. CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that this unprecedented act contradicts the principles of democracy and disregards the sanctity of the judiciary. The ordinance once again strips the elected government of its powers, leaving it without control over the bureaucracy and services, the CM explained.

Asserting the unconstitutionality and undemocratic nature of the ordinance, the Delhi CM Kejriwal highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of democracy enshrined in the constitution. He stressed that the people have the right to elect their own government, which should possess all necessary powers to govern the administration effectively. “We live in a democracy, we have a constitution, and the constitution says there will be elections and people will elect their own government which will have all the powers to run the administration,” he said.

Looking ahead, he informed that the ordinance is expected to be presented in the Parliament during the monsoon session in the last week of July. While the BJP enjoys a majority in the Lok Sabha, they fall short in the Rajya Sabha with only 93 MPs out of 238. CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal expressed confidence that by uniting non-BJP parties, the bill can be defeated in the Rajya Sabha collectively.

To garner strength for this campaign, Shri Arvind Kejriwal sought the support of CM Thiru MK Stalin and his party DMK during his visit. Appreciating the support extended by CM Thiru MK Stalin, he informed that the DMK has assured its solidarity with the people of Delhi and the elected government. “DMK MPs will vote against the bill and help us defeat it. I also appeal to all other parties to unite for this cause.

Over the last few weeks, we have been going across the country, meeting with different parties and we have got a very favourable response from all over. With every passing day I am feeling confident that we will be able to defeat the bill. This will be like a semi-final to the 2024 elections. If this bill is defeated in the Rajya Sabha, a very strong message will go out in the country that the entire opposition has united and the Modi Government is not going to come back,” he concluded.

Punjab CM Sardar Bhagwant Mann thanked his Tamil Nadu counterpart Shri MK Stalin and said that the AAP delegation has not come here just to highlight the problems of the people of Delhi, but have come over here to save democracy.

He pointed out that the BJP is troubling the non-BJP states in the country either by issuing unconstitutional ordinances or through the office of the Governor. “As you all know Shri MK Stalin-led state government here in Tamil Nadu has constantly been troubled by the Governor who is refusing to sign the Bills. Similarly in Punjab, my government had to go to the Supreme Court as the Governor was not allowing us to call the Budget session of the state legislative assembly,” he said.
