Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh has vowed strict legal action against those responsible for the killing of four members of the Naga community in an ambush in Kangpokpi district, warning that anyone attempting to disrupt the state’s peace process would not be spared.
At least four Liangmai Naga community members, including the Principal of a private school, were killed and another person injured when armed militants allegedly ambushed civilians along the IT Road in Kangpokpi.
Strongly condemning the attack, the Home Minister said the violence had caused deep anguish among the Naga community and peace-loving people of Manipur and undermined collective efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-hit state.
“Those responsible will face the full force of law. Anyone attempting to obstruct or derail the peace process will not be spared,” Singh said in a statement.
Expressing grief over the deaths, he conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured person.
Singh appealed to community leaders, civil society organisations and members of the Naga community to maintain peace and exercise restraint following the incident.
“Justice will be pursued firmly, while peace and unity must prevail,” he said.
Soon after the ambush, Central and state security forces launched extensive search and combing operations in the area to track down the suspected militants involved in the killings.
Kangpokpi is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community, although Naga communities also reside in several parts of the district.
The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Naga people in Manipur, and other Naga organisations alleged that two to three armed Kuki militants attacked Naga civilians between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga, an area considered a vital link for Naga communities living along the IT Road.
The organisations condemned the attack and demanded immediate action against those responsible, describing the incident as a serious threat to peace and communal harmony in the region.
The deceased were identified as Wisobou Charenamai, Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai and Anil Wijunamai.
Ringkangmai was the founder and Principal of Right Path School, while Charenamai was Chairman of the Chawangkining Village Authority and a former Vice-President of a local organisation.
The killings have triggered concern among Naga organisations, with security forces continuing search operations in and around the area to locate and apprehend those allegedly involved in the ambush.
