Jolt for Sumedh Saini, HC rejects bail plea, dismisses petition for transfer of case

Chandigarh, Sept 8, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today rejected the bail plea of former Punjab DGP Sumedh Saini in the case related to kidnapping, disappearance and murder of Balwant Singh Multani, a former employee of the CITCO and son of a former IAS officer.

The court also dismissed Saini’s petition demanding quashing of FIR and transfer of case from Punjab to any other state or handing it over to the CBI.

The decisions regarding the two petitions were today pronounced by Justice Fatehdeep Singh who had Monday heard the arguments of both the sides on both the petitions filed by Saini.

This has created a peculiar situation for Saini who is left only with the option of approaching the Supreme Court or face arrest.

Earlier Justice Amol Rattan Singh and Justice Suveer Sehgal had recused themselves from hearing the cases related to the former DGP after which the case was assigned to the court of Justice Fatehdeep Singh.

Advocate Sartej Singh Narula, representing the state in this case, said that even as Saini has the right to approach the Supreme Court, but chances of him getting any reprieve from the Apex Court were negligible.

Narula said that Saini, a former DGP who has absconded after the things turned against him, had pleaded that he was being targeted because of political influence but the HC was told that the prosecution now has solid evidence and witnesses in this case who have come out with startling facts in this case and this was more than enough to nail Saini in this case.

Narula said that Multani, son of a former IAS officer, died due to third degree torture in Chandigarh Police station but as his father was pursuing the case legally and vigorously, Saini implicated Multani in a false case at PS Kadian. It was shown that Multani was taken to Kadian from Chandigarh from where he fled. Narula said, this was not the case and even police personnel posted at PS Kadian at that time, have stated that Multani was never brought to PS Kadian and the man who was brought to PS Kadian was someone else.Yes Punjab Online Since 2012
