Security arrangements were intensified around Jharkhand Chief Minister’s residence in Ranchi on Thursday as the students’ agitation over alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations entered its 20th day.
The Ranchi district administration stepped up deployment following Intelligence inputs suggesting that protesting students could march towards the Chief Minister’s residence on August 20. Although the protesters have not formally announced such a programme, security agencies have been placed on high alert.
More than 100 additional armed personnel from the Jharkhand Jaguar and Jharkhand Armed Police have been deployed around the Chief Minister’s residence on Kanke Road and adjoining areas.
Barricades have been erected to create a security perimeter stretching from Suchna Bhawan Chowk to Ram Mandir Chowk, while security has been strengthened within a radius of around 500 metres of the residence. The road connecting Suchna Bhawan to ATI has also been closed.
The area is being monitored through drone cameras and other surveillance systems. The enhanced security arrangements have affected traffic movement on Kanke Road, with vehicles coming from Morabadi and Kutchery Chowk being diverted through alternative routes.
Students have been protesting at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium for nearly 20 days, demanding comprehensive reforms in the recruitment examination system and an impartial probe into alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC examinations.
The state government has reportedly accepted nearly 90 per cent of the protesters’ demands. However, the students continue to insist on a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities and paper leaks in the JPSC Civil Services Examination and JSSC-CGL examination.
On August 10, the protesters marched towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and clashed with police. Authorities used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd and subsequently resorted to a lathi-charge.
Following the confrontation, student groups announced plans to intensify their agitation, maintaining that the protest would continue until the government takes a concrete decision on their key demands.
Political parties, including the Congress and BJP, have extended support to the protesting students and stepped up pressure on the state government. BJP leaders had earlier staged a demonstration outside the Chief Minister’s residence and were detained by police.
