The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take action against the king-pin in the Khanna illegal distillery case by investigating the role of the Beant Singh family instead of indulging in a cover up exercise by targeting pawns.
In a statement here, SAD leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal said though the government had taken a belated action by arresting one of the frontmen running the Rs 200 crore illegal distillery cum bottling plant, the action was too little too late.
“We demand the government inquire into the role of Congress leaders who patronised accused Congressman Kulwinder Singh Kala including Khanna legislator Gurkirat Kotli, Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu and Payal legislator Lakhbir Singh Lakha”.
Mr Maheshinder Grewal said it was shameful that the Khanna police had taken one fortnight to take action against Kala despite a huge public hue and cry only because he enjoyed the patronage of the Khanna legislator and top Congress leaders.
“This is the second time the Congress government has taken action against small fish in the Rs 5,600 crore excise scam. Earlier in the case of the Ghanour illegal distillery bust also the government took action against two local Congressmen including a Sarpanch instead of arresting Congress legislators Madan Lal Jalalpur and Hardyal Kamboj who were the king-pins in the case”.
Demanding a transparent inquiry into both the Khanna and Ghanour illegal distilleries, the Akali leader said strict action was also needed in the case to break the politico- liquor mafia nexus as well end the bootlegging operations of Congress leaders which were endangering the lives of thousands of people. He said an independent inquiry should be ordered into the case by a central agency or a sitting judge of the high court.
