The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded the Improvement Trust immediately cancel a proposed auction which aims to carve out plots from a piece of land which has been reserved for a community centre in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
In a statement here, former minister Maheshinder Singh Grewal said it was shocking that the Improvement Trust had fixed an auction for August 8 to auction of a vacant plot which had been earmarked for a community centre in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. He said this was a blatant illegality as the Trust could not effect a change in land use for a plot which had been earmarked for public use.
Mr Maheshinder Grewal said residents of the area had also written to the Improvement Trust to cancel the auction fortwith but this had not been done till now. He said in case the Trust did not cancel the auction, the SAD would join the struggle of the residents to secure justice in the case.
He said the vacant plot had earlier been earmarked for a Primary School but upon the demand of the residents the site was allowed to be kept for a community centre. “Any move to auction this land for profit will adversely affect the people of the area as no other land is available for building a community centre”, he added.
