IAS who slapped youth was transferred earlier for taking Rs.10,000 bribe

Raipur, May 23, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
Chhatisgarh IAS Ranbir Sharma, who kicked a row by slapping a youth in full public view and smashed his mobile on the road had been in the news earlier too.

The officer has now been removed as Collector and transferred elsewhere on the orders of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel after a video of his behavior went viral on social media. He issued a video apology but that didn’t work as social media was abuzz condemning his act and demanding stringent punishment. The netizens are even questioning the order to transfer him as mild punishment.

Ranbir Sharma, a 2012 batch IAS officer, was earlier arrested in 2015 for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs.10,000 from a Patwari posted at Bhanupartappur in Chhatisgarh’s Kanker District.

Then posted as Sub-Divisional Magistrate, he was shifted as Under Secretary Mantralya at Naya Raipur after the Patwari – Sudhir Lakra – complained to anti-corruption officials that Ranbir Sharma was consistently demanding bribe in some or the other form.

The Patwari had complained that lately, Sharma had demanded a bribe of Rs.40,000 from him and reportedly threatened him of acting against him based on reports of forgery published in local newspapers. Lakra asked for relief in the bribe amount, but Sharma reportedly refused.

Officials had then said that Sharma had already taken Rs.20,000 as bribe via his office boy Ganeshram Sori whom ACB had caught with Rs.10,000 accepting as the second installment. Sori had later admitted before the police that he was taking the money on behalf of Sharma as per his orders.
