Deputy Commissioner Mrs Komal Mittal informed today evening that due to heavy rainfall and water overflow in seasonal rivulets (choes), nearly 2000 hectares of agricultural land in the district has been damaged, so far.
She said the affected areas include Tiwana, Khajur Mandi, Sadhanpur, and Dangdhera. The damaged crop area will soon be assessed through special girdawari, and a detailed report will be submitted to the Government.
The Deputy Commissioner further stated that in Lalru, one farmer lost his life due to drowning in the recent days, while one kutcha house collapsed during the rains.
According to her, heavy rainfall and strong water flow in the seasonal rivulets/choes have also disrupted road connectivity to five villages near Jayanti Ki Rao. In addition, some roads and culverts have suffered damage, and a report regarding this is being forwarded to the Government. This has interrupted smooth traffic of about 7000 population.
Appealing to residents, the Deputy Commissioner urged people to stay away from choes, rivers, and drains during these days. She specifically warned against crossing culvert/Causeways or low-lying roads when water is overflowing.
She added that at present, the flow of water in Sukhna Choe and Ghaggar River is normal and outside the danger mark. The district administration is keeping a close watch on the situation, and emergency response teams have been kept fully prepared to tackle any exigency.
