Haryana Police bust Gang of Nigerian Cheats involved in Online Fraud, 7 Arrested

With the arrest of seven accused, including 5 Nigeria nationals, Haryana Police have busted a gang of cheats involved in online frauds in Faridabad district. They used to cheat people through Facebook promising expensive gifts.

Giving this information here today, a Haryana Police spokesperson said that arrested accused were identified as Williams Michael, a resident of Liberia, West African States (Ecowas), Promise Ebere Okoli @ Prince of Osina, Nigeria, Halimat Mohammed of Uhonmwonde Lafia, Nigeria, Okeke Nnabugo of AWGU Nigeria, Kenechukwu Okonta of Nigeria, Anurag of Ballabhgarh and Nishant of Chawla Colony Ballabhgarh.

Police had recovered two passports of different countries from Williams Michael and Promise Ebere Okoli. The passport of accused Halimat has expired. All five foreign accused living in a house in Faridabad.

Explaining the modus operandi, he said that first these fraudsters used to befriend people by creating Facebook profiles in the name of foreign girl. After winning the confidence, they lured them by offering costly gifts from abroad like gold jewelry, mobile phones.

They used to convince people that the gift parcels coming from abroad need clearances from custom, excise and other taxes. For this, they asked their target to deposit a certain amount to a particular bank account and cheat gullible people.

After getting a complaint of online fraud in which the victim was cheated by Rs35,500 on July 23, a police team was constituted to arrest the fraudsters. Working on the tech-based intelligence and other inputs, it had arrested seven accused including 5 Nigerians.

Both accused Anurag and Nishant had provided bank account numbers to Nigerians for getting money.

All were produced before the court which remanded them 4-day police custody for intensive interrogation. Further probe into this case is on.
