Gurbhajan Gill a magician of words, an intellectual and emotional human being: Dr SS Johal

Under the, aegis of Gujranwala Khalsa, Education Council, Post Graduate Department of Punjabi organised a seminar on the Contribution of Prof. Gurbhajan Gill to Literature. The programme was inaugurated with the welcome address of Dr. S. P. Singh, Formerly Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and President, Gujranwala Khalsa Education Council, Ludhiana, and he welcomed, Dr. S. S. Johal, Formerly Vice Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda who were presiding over the seminar.

Besides, he greeted the Resource Persons of the day, the erudite scholars, Dr. Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, Formerly Head, Department of Punjabi, Punjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Surjit Singh Bhatti, Formerly Head, Department of Punjabi, Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr. S. P. Singh told that he was proud of Gurbhajan Gill being his student from 1971-1974.

Gurbhajan Gill started his literary career while he was a student at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College and has been contributing to Punjabi Literature, for the last fifty years. He has given 17 Anthologies of poetry and one prose book too. Ashkum Ash, an American poet presented deep regards and affection for Prof. Gurbhajan Gill by composing and reciting a poem titled Sahitkaran Vichon Sahitkar Suninda.

While discussing, Prof. Gill’s poetry, Dr. Bhatti told that his poetry is the verse and voice of people. Not only he shares the problem of farmers but also brings out the dishonest politics through his poetry. He also satirises the supposedly religious contractors.

Dr. Sirsa critically analyzed his poetry on the basis of his two anthologies namely Charakhri and Surtaal. His verse is original, in popular simple diction of the people, for the people and addressed to people. Prof. Gurbhajan Gill has contributed a lot for spreading Punjabi language at the international level.

Dr. S. S. Johal, Formerly Vice Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, in his presidential address told that Gurbhajan Gill is a magician of words, a knowledgeable intellectual, an emotional human and a presenter of ethos. He told that a literary person is always has the capability of far sightedness and makes us aware of future challenges.

Dr. Gurbhajan Gill, while sharing his creative process told that he took admission in the college with the inspiration of his elder brother Principal Jaswant Singh Gill and under the influence of Dr. S. P. Singh, was attracted towards Punjabi literature. Dr. Gurbhajan Gill shared his memories, experiences, his childhood, the memories of his parents, teachers, Punjabi writers, and much more.

He quoted and incorporated many examples from his poems to solidified his thoughts. Dr. Arvinder Singh, Principal of the college, proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. Sharanjit kaur moderated the function and it was attended by Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Dr. Tajinder Kaur as well as other teachers of the Institute.
