Govt. should resolve sheller owners’ issues to save farmers from being ‘fleeced’ by ‘Mandi Mafia’: Bhagwant Mann

Chandigarh, September 21, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state president and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann has urged the Captain Amarinder Singh Government to take an urgent call on the issue of sheller owners in the state so that the beleaguered farmers were not subjected to open ‘loot’ or face harassment at the hands of the ‘mandi’ mafia during the peak paddy season.

In a statement issued from party headquarters on Saturday, Bhagwant Mann said that against the backdrop of the newspaper reports pouring in from district of Punjab reflecting the mood of the miffed sheller owners, who were mulling agitation recourse if the government failed to revisit and roll back on, what they described as anti-sheller-industry, the new custom milling policy, were the alarming signals necessitating the government to pitch in to resolve their issues.

The AAP MP said that if such a situation arose due to the indifferent attitude of the government in the saddle, the worst sufferer would be the farmer if the seller owners resorted to go on strike during the peak paddy season, thereby giving a free hand to the ‘Mandi Mafia’ to call the shot and indulge in open ‘fleecing’ of the farmers at the ‘mandis’, saying that Aam Aadmi Party would never allow that to happen come what may, Mann threatened.

Mann further said that the process of paddy arrival had already begun at various ‘mandis’ adding that if the sheller owners were not able to lift the produce at proper intervals, the farmers, ‘mandi’ laborers, transporters and ‘arhtiyas’ would be worst hit.

The AAP leader said that industries and sheller industry in the state were subjected to face closure owing to the anti-traders, anti-businessmen and anti-farm-labour policies of the government, alleging that the government procurement agencies had not yet paid the dues amounting to a whopping Rs 1,000 crore to the sheller owners pending for a year.

Mann urged the state Food Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu to take a call on the demands of the sheller owners, sooner than later, so that the farmers, sheller owners, ‘arhatis’, transporters and farm labor were not subjected to any harassment at the hands of the ‘Mandi mafia’.

Bhagwant Mann warned the government that if it failed to resolve the sheller owners’ issue sooner than later, AAP would mobilize the traders community in the state and sound the bugle of confrontation against it.
