GGN Khalsa College honoured two turbaned Immigrant Punjabi Writers

Parvasi Sahitya Adhiyan Kendra of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College Ludhiana honoured two NRI Punjabi writers Surjit Singh Madhopuri Canada and Dr. Gurbir Singh Bhullar today. The event was presided over by Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, President, Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy, Ludhiana.

On this occasion, Dr. S.P. Singh, Former Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and President, Gujranwala Khalsa Educational Council, formally welcomed all and briefed the audience on the major activities of the Parvasi Sahitya Adhiyan Kendra. He said that we are fortunate to have two turbaned writers in Canada and Switzerland and leading Punjabis Surjit Singh Madhopuri and Dr. Gurbir Singh Bhullar in this organization.

Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy, Chairman, Prof.Gurbhajan Gill introducing both the personalities, said that Surjit Singh Madhopuri has established his unique identity as a lyricist and singer in his native village Madhopur (Ropar) Punjab and Karambhoomi Surrey (Canada). He is the first Asian and turbaned Sikh to be honored by the Government of Canada for exemplary bravery.

Dr. Gurbir Singh Bhullar, Patti (Tarn Taran) said that after obtaining a Masters Degree in Crop Science from PAU Ludhiana, he obtained his Ph.D. and did post doctoral studies from Switzerland and is currently serving as professor there and also composing poetry in Punjabi.

Mr. Surjit Singh Madhopuri from Surrey said that he immigrated to Canada in 1975. Apart from being the Vice President of the Central Punjabi Writers’ Association of North America, he has been associated with many literary societies in the country and abroad. He also sang some of his own songs and some songs written by famous poet Gurdev Singh Mann, On this occasion

Scientist and poet from Switzerland Dr. Gurbir Singh Bhullar spent his childhood in Patti (Tarn Taran), and after studying at Khalsa College Amritsar, he came to P.A. U. Ludhiana of which he shared many memories. He said that he had been interested in reading Punjabi literature since his school days. They shared a lot of information about the culture and language of the people of Switzerland.

Honorary General Secretary of Gujranwala Khalsa Educational Council Dr. Arvinder Singh on behalf of Parvasi Sahitya Adhiyan Kendra. Praised such activities under the leadership of Dr.S.P. Singh.

Dr. Tejinder Kaur, Coordinator, Parvasi Sahitya Adhiyan Kendra formally thanked everyone. Parvasi Sahitya Adhiyan Kendra presented Phulkaris, Mementoes and the issue of the quarterly magazine “Parvas” to the guests. The Vice President of Punjabi Sahitya Akademi, Sehjpreet Singh Mangat and Trailochan Lochi also participated. Head of Punjabi department Dr. Bhupinder Singh Dr.Gurpreet Singh, Prof. Sharanjit Kaur and Prof. Jasmeet Kaur were also present.
