In a shocking escalation of gang-related violence, two members of the same family were killed in Batala last night. Harjit Kaur, the mother of notorious jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and his cousin, Karanvir Singh, were ambushed by two motorcycle-borne attackers near their rented home on Qadian Road at approximately 9:07 PM.
Eyewitnesses say Harjit Kaur and Karanvir were inside an SUV parked outside the residence when the gunmen opened fire at close range. Karanvir, who is reportedly the son of a Punjab Police ASI, died instantly. Harjit Kaur was critically injured and rushed to Civil Hospital, Batala, before being transferred to a facility in Amritsar. She later succumbed to her wounds.
Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was shifted to Assam’s Silchar Jail in March this year.
The notorious Davinder Bambiha gang, a fierce rival of Bhagwanpuria’s group, publicly claimed responsibility via a social media post, stating that Karanvir was their intended target.
In an unverified social media post circulating shortly after the incident, a user identifying as Dony Ball Manga claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that he, along with Prabh Dasuwal and Kaushal Chaudhary, had avenged the killing of Gora Bariar through this act.
The post further alleged that Karanvir Singh had been actively managing the criminal operations of the jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria in his absence, implying that his involvement in ongoing gang activities made him a target. Authorities have not yet confirmed the authenticity of this claim, but it is now a key focus in the ongoing investigation.
The victims’ bodies are currently at the Civil Hospital, Batala mortuary, where post-mortems are scheduled for Friday morning.
Following the incident, Batala Police immediately registered a murder case and launched a full-scale investigation. According to authorities, efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers are actively underway, with several leads being pursued.
