Foundation stone of PGI Satellite Centre at Ferozepur to be laid on Baisakhi: Sukhbir Badal

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today announced that the foundation stone of the Rs 450 crore PGI satellite centre for Ferozepur would be laid on Baishakhi and that the medical institution would be completed in one years’ time.

The SAD President, who visited rain affected villages in Lambi and Balluana assembly constituencies, said he had taken up the issue with union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan who had assured him that the foundation stone of the project would be laid on April 13.

Mr Badal also disclosed that he had held a review meeting with the PGI Director as well as ministerial authorities to fast forward the project. “The project timelines have been finalized. The tender is being prepared presently and the executing agency will be decided by December 1 this year.

Actual work on the ground will start by June 1 next year”. Mr Badal also disclosed that he would hold review meetings to oversee the implementation of the project every month and that he was confident that the satellite centre would come up in one year’s time ensuring specialized health treatment was available to the people at their doorstep”.

The SAD President also told newsmen that he had taken up the issue of establishment of a 100-bed medical college at Fazilka with the Finance Commission. “The basic purpose is to augment medical services in the border belt. In order to make the project feasible I have requested that it be attached with the district hospital. I am confident that this project will be cleared soon”, he added.

Meanwhile the SAD President also visited rain affected villages in Lambi and Balluana where crop including cotton has been destroyed over a large area. Terming the destruction of the crops as a man-made disaster, Mr Badal said the Congress government’s failure to clean irrigation channels had led to resulted in huge losses for farmers.

He demanded immediate girdwari be conducted in all villages and enhanced compensation be given to affected farmers. He said simultaneously money should be released to those whose houses had suffered damage and that labourers should be compensated for the loss of livelihood.

The SAD President also appealed to the Akali rank and file to arrange potable water through tanks in affected villages besides ensuring there was no shortage of fodder. He also disclosed that he had requested the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to send medical teams to the area as soon as possible.

The SAD President visited the villages along with party leaders including Fazilka district president Gurpal Singh Grewal, Parkash Singh Bhatti, Gurtej Ghuriana, Hardeep Dhillon and Satinderjit Singh Manta.
