Patiala, December 22, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
Former Punjab IPS officer Amar Singh Chahal, who retired as Inspector General of Police (IGP), attempted suicide on Monday and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Patiala. His condition has been described as critical.
According to police sources, a handwritten note was recovered in which Chahal detailed the circumstances that led to his extreme step. The note, written in the form of a letter and addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alleges that he was defrauded of nearly ₹8 crore by what he described as a “highly sophisticated gang of scammers.”
In the letter, Chahal stated that he had recently joined a WhatsApp group operating under the name of an “IPS group,” where members promised exceptionally high returns on investments. Trusting the claims, he reportedly invested large sums over time, only to later realise that the operation was fraudulent.
Chahal further wrote that a significant portion of the money—approximately ₹7.5 crore—had been borrowed from relatives and close associates. He expressed deep distress over his inability to repay those who had extended financial support to him in good faith.
Seeking accountability, the former senior police officer urged that the alleged fraud be investigated by an independent agency and that those responsible be identified and prosecuted. Meanwhile, police officials said they have initiated a probe into the allegations mentioned in the note and are examining digital and financial records linked to the case.
Authorities said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses.
