Fair Public Opinion on implications of UCC can only be drawn once its draft is available for public review: GMF & SKP

Chandigarh, July 12, 2023 (Kulbir Singh Kalsi)
The Global Middas Foundation (GMF), a charitable organization, and Sadda Khirda Punjab (SKP), based out of Delhi, have submitted their views and suggestions to Law Commission of India in context to the public notice issued to invite suggestions for the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Both the organizations believe that the final draft of the code will be based on secular values and principle of natural justice for all citizens of the country and have extended their support in spreading awareness about implications of UCC in maintaining peace, harmony and safeguarding the interests of all in this nation building exercise.

Now in their 3rd year, both the organizations, through their various initiatives have more than 3 lakh people across India and NRIs too connected with them. GMF and SKP are active across India including Delhi and Punjab, working with market welfare associations, resident welfare associations, gurdwara/ mandir committees, schools -colleges, religious/ spiritual organizations, eminent social personalities and public in general.

Sardar Inderpreet Singh said, “Both the organizations have extended their support with various commissions like National Commission for Minorities (NCM), Delhi Minorities Commission, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees (SGPC/ DSGMC/ HSGMC/ Gurdwara Singh Sabha, etc.), prominent civil society organizations like The Sikh Forum, interfaith organizations, sangat and panth, to collectively spread awareness and rightful information not only among minorities but general public also to understand and de code the UCC guidelines and assist them to seek the positive aspects of it.”

Based on the multiple views, suggestions, feedback and concerns formed based on interactions, discussions, webinars, meetings, press conferences held in Delhi/Punjab and across India, the conclusion drawn and stand taken by GMF and SKP is that till the draft of UCC is not available, accepting or condemn it is neither rationally nor logically correct. Looking at the important aspects of legal implications it can have especially on Sikh Community who are part of Minorities and the socio-religious practices and customs etc. is very important.
