Actress Erica Fernandes has opened up about her process of stepping into and out of characters, saying she finds it relatively easy to separate her professional and personal lives once the cameras stop rolling.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, the actress, known for shows such as Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, said she fully immerses herself in a role while shooting but has no difficulty returning to her own personality after completing a scene.
“Personally, I can get into and come out of a character quite easily. When we are on set, we become our characters, and once we are done, we return to ourselves,” she said.
Erica is currently playing Dr Major Naina in the military-medical drama 108 Base Hospital – Uri. She said the show’s medical cases were engaging and provided the cast with opportunities to learn about situations they had not encountered before.
“There wasn’t any particular scene where I found it difficult to come out of the character. But the cases in this show were very interesting and we learnt a lot from them. There were many unique situations that made the experience enjoyable,” she said.
The actress also revealed that she undertook extensive preparation to portray a medical professional convincingly. Her research focused on doctors’ mannerisms, body language and the procedures associated with emergency medical care.
“I did a lot of research. In fact, everyone on our set calls me ‘Dr. Fernandes’ because I became so involved in the character,” she said.
For around a month, she watched medical shows and videos, studied the body language of doctors and surgeons, and viewed material related to medical procedures and treatments. She said she hoped the preparation would be reflected in her performance.

The series premiered on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day, and airs every Saturday and Sunday on COLORS and JioHotstar.
