Ensuring Punjabi youth’s return from Malaysia: Jaishankar

Chandigarh, July 3, 2019-

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday said the Indian government was in touch with Malaysian authorities for the return of a Punjabi youth detained in a jail in Malaysia.

He said the Indian High Commission in Malaysia was in regular touch with Harbans Singh who was imprisoned on May 13 for visa violation and released on June 19.

“He is currently in a detention camp for repatriation. An emergency travel document has been issued by our HC (High Commission) for his expeditious return,” Jaishankar tweeted.

A day earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had drawn Jaishankar’s attention to the case.

According to the victim’s family, Harbans Singh had gone to Malaysia in August 2018 on a tourist visa. He was, however, taken into custody on grounds that the family is unaware of, the Chief Minister pointed out in his letter to Jaishankar.

The Chief Minister also said that he has submitted proof of Harbans Singh’s Indian citizenship.

In the backdrop of these facts, Amarinder Singh has sought the “personal indulgence” of the Union Minister in the efforts to secure the release of Harbans Singh from the custody of the Malaysian police.  (Agency)
