Elderly Couple Found Dead at Salt Lake Home in Kolkata; Suicide Suspected

Kolkata, July 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

An elderly couple was found dead inside their residence in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Thursday morning, with police suspecting suicide while awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.

The deceased have been identified as Sajal Kumar Kundu and his wife, Ranjana Kundu. Their bodies were recovered from their home in the AE Block of Salt Lake.

According to the police, the couple’s son, who had been staying at his in-laws’ house in Ultadanga with his wife since Wednesday, tried to contact his parents on Thursday morning. After repeated calls went unanswered and both their phones remained switched off, he requested a neighbour to check on them.

The neighbour visited the house but received no response despite knocking on the door. Growing suspicious, the neighbour informed local residents and the couple’s son, following which the police were alerted.

When police reached the spot, they found the house locked from the inside. The couple’s son, who had a spare key, arrived shortly afterwards and opened the door. The bodies of the elderly couple were found lying on a bed inside the house.

Local residents claimed that Ranjana Kundu had been battling cancer.

During the search of the house, police recovered a bottle of poison, leading investigators to suspect that the couple may have died by suicide after consuming the substance.

However, officials said no conclusion has been drawn regarding the cause of death. No suicide note was recovered from the house, and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident will be established only after the autopsy report is received.

Police said all possible angles are being investigated.
