The Enforcement Directorate has summoned three of India’s top fashion designers to explain payments made in cash by a Punjab Congress leader.
The leader said to be an elected MLA of the party from the state is reportedly facing an ED inquiry and a scrutiny of his accounts has revealed some transactions which are being investigated.
Sources said, the MLA made payments running into lakhs to Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar and Sabyasachi. All three are India’s top notch fashion designers and quite popular in Bollywood, NRIs, Corporate and political circles in India.
The source said that the three designers were paid in cash by the politician for designing the dresses for a wedding ceremony a few years back. “And there was no record of the cash transaction in their IT returns. So they have been called to present their side,” the source said. However, the source did not name the politician.
The ED has issued notices to the three asking them to appear in person at ED’s Delhi office to explain the deal and the transaction with the Congress MLA.
Sources said that even the Income Tax could be asked to crop in and conduct investigations in the matter.
