In a significant development in Punjab, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a thorough search of farmer leader Sukhwinder Singh, popularly known as Sukh Gill Totewala’s residence in Moga district on the morning of Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The ED reached his home at approximately 5:30 AM. As president of BKU Totewala, one of the 32 farmer unions under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), Gill was not present during the raid but later addressed the public via a video posted on social media while the operation was ongoing.
The ED has not officially disclosed the reason behind the raid. However, it is connected to a complaint lodged in February, accusing Gill and three associates—including his mother, Pritam Kaur, and relatives Talwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh—of defrauding a US deportee for ₹45 lakh.
The complainant, Jaswinder Singh of Pandori Arian village, stated that Gill, who runs Fateh Immigration in Dharamkot, promised to secure legal US entry and a three-year work permit. Jaswinder allegedly raised the funds by selling land, mortgaging his home, and selling livestock.
Instead of a legal route, Jaswinder was allegedly trafficked through the dangerous “dunki” path via Panama, traveling by boat, taxi, and bus, before reaching the US–Mexico border on January 27. He was apprehended and deported back to India on February 13, leading to the FIR at Dharamkot Police Station under the BNS and Emigration Act.
Gill, in his defense, described himself as a modest farmer with just 8–10 acres of land. He challenged the ED’s search, expressing confidence that no incriminating evidence would be found at his residence. “They target me while those with crores go free,” he decried, alleging that both Union and State governments are politically targeting farmer leaders.
