‘Z’ Category Protection Strengthened; Increased Security Measures Implemented

The security detail of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has been significantly enhanced with the addition of two bullet-resistant vehicles to his convoy, according to official sources. This reinforcement comes as a direct result of a recent comprehensive review of his ‘Z’ category security protection, conducted by central Intelligence agencies in response to escalating regional tensions.
The decision to bolster EAM Jaishankar’s security follows the heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan, compounded by New Delhi’s robust diplomatic response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives.
In the wake of these developments, intelligence agencies undertook a thorough reassessment of EAM Jaishankar’s threat perception, leading to the recommendation for an augmented security convoy.
As the External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, aged 70, has played a pivotal role in India’s international diplomatic efforts during this period of crisis. He has been at the forefront of discussions with global leaders and foreign ministers concerning “Operation Sindoor,” India’s military response to the Pahalgam attack. His critical position in shaping India’s diplomatic strategy amidst regional instability has necessitated heightened security measures.
This latest security upgrade builds upon a previous enhancement in October 2024, when EAM Jaishankar’s security cover was elevated from the ‘Y’ category to the ‘Z’ category, the second-highest tier within the central VIP protection system.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), through its specialized VIP security unit, is responsible for providing armed protection to individuals under this security classification. Currently, the CRPF safeguards approximately 200 high-profile individuals, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and prominent Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The central VIP security categories encompass Z-plus, Z, Y-plus, Y, and X, with Z-plus representing the highest level of protection.
