The former Head of Extension Education Department and presently Brand Ambassador of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Dr Jaswinder Bhalla called upon the farmers of Punjab to adopt Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) Technology to conserve water, which is an elixir of life. Speaking during the PAU Live Programme, he informed that the DSR technique also helped in cutting expenses on labour and farm inputs, and that it would be of immense benefit to the farmers economically.
Dr Nirmal Jaura, Associate Director (Public Relations), Communication Centre, PAU, stressed upon the farmers to practice scientific farming for conservation of natural resources.
Dr Neena Singla, Head, Department of Zoology, divulged that there were reports of rodents attacking the DSR fields during the previous years. She urged the farmers to adopt PAU recommendations for rodent management such as proper weed management; reconstruction of bunds; killing of rats coming out of burrows; use of traps; use of poison bait and precautionary measures during its preparation and use; controlling of rats before sowing, during germination stage and crop maturity, etc. These recommendations are given in detail in Package of Practices for farmers’ benefit, she added.
