Rupinderjit Chahal, Ld. District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Patiala visited at Central Jail, Patiala, New District Jail, Nabha and Open Air Jail, Nabha alongwith Ms Manni Arora, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Patiala.
On this occasion, Hon’ble Judges interacted with the jail inmates about their grievances/problems being faced by them. Jail Superintendents, other officers and staff of the jails were instructed to ensure timely redressal of grievances/problems of jail inmates and were directed to pay special attention towards health and medical facilities which are being provided to the jail inmates.
A campaign “Vocational Literacy for Jail Inmates” in the jails of District Patiala has been launched on 20.9.2023 for imparting the vocational training to the prisoners which will last for one month i.e. 20.9.2023 to 20.10.2023. Under this campaign, various training programmes like Agriculture, Horticulture, Phulkari, Stitching and Computer for jail inmates have been started in Central Jail, Patiala and New District Jail, Nabha. Today Hon’ble Judges visited to these training centers and interacted with jail inmates who are availing training.
On this occasion, jail inmates were apprised of the rights available to them and about the concept of plea bargaining in detail by Ms Manni Arora, CJM/Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Patiala. She told the jail inmates about the persons who are entitled for free legal aid as per section 12 of Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 i.e. a member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe; a victim of trafficking in human beings or beggar, a women or a child; a person with disability, a person who is a victim of a mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, drought, earthquake or industrial disaster; or, an industrial workman; or in custody or a person whose annual income is less than three lacs. She further told that free legal services can be availed by visiting the Front Office at District Legal Services Authority, Patiala or needy person can contact on office telephone number 0175-2306500.
