Delhi Police obstruct press briefing by Congress MPs Partap Bajwa, Deepender Hooda; Breach of Privilege motion moved

New Delhi, July 22, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
Congress MPs Partap Singh Bajwa and Deepender Singh Hooda have submitted a notice of a Breach of Privilege motion under rule 188 of the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business in the Council of States against the Delhi Police to the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha.

The two MPs have taken this step due to Delhi Police’s attempts to obstruct them while they were briefing the Press at Vijay Chowk, New Delhi at 1:15 PM during the Monsoon Session.

Bajwa said, “I am extremely surprised that the Delhi Police tried to stop two Members of Parliament from speaking to the Press and attempted to direct us to some “higher authority” for permission. In a democratic country the only higher authorities are the people of India, who we represent, and the Constitution of India.”

The Rajya Sabha Member from Punjab said every Indian has the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression. An attempt to curb this right is akin to imposing martial law in an effort to create a police state.

He said, “It is our right to raise the issue of the anti-farmer laws both inside and outside the House. The Government of India has continuously ignored the voices of lakhs of farmers, who have been protesting at the borders of New Delhi for nearly eight months now. Over 400 of them have lost their lives during these protests and yet the Government has seen fit to gag dissent.”

Bajwa said, earlier during the day, the offices of a large vernacular media house were raided due to their fearless coverage of issues affecting the nation today. As MPs, we are being consistently denied a discussion on the anti-farmer laws in the House and in the afternoon MPs are being blocked from speaking to the press.

“I only wonder what other drastic actions the Government of India will take by today evening and in future, that would further pervert the democratic norms of India,” he said.
