ABOUT SITARAM YECHURY
Early Involvement in Politics
Sitaram Yechury has been a prominent figure in Indian politics, particularly within the leftist movement. He joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975, just a year after becoming a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). Yechuryās political journey began during his time as a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he was actively involved in student politics.
Arrest During the Emergency
During the Emergency imposed by the Indian government in the mid-1970s, Yechury was arrested while still a student at JNU. Despite this setback, he continued his political activism and went on to serve as the president of the JNU Students’ Union three times between 1977 and 1988. Along with Prakash Karat, Yechury is credited with strengthening the leftist presence at JNU during this period.
Contribution to Indian Politics
Sitaram Yechury is widely recognized for upholding the coalition-building legacy of former CPI(M) General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Notably, Yechury played a key role in Indian politics by co-drafting the Common Minimum Programme for the United Front government in 1996 alongside P. Chidambaram. His efforts were instrumental in the formation of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2004.
RECENT CRITICISM OF THE UNION GOVERNMENT
Yechuryās Sharp Critique
Recently, Sitaram Yechury has been vocal in his criticism of the Union government, particularly under Prime Minister Narendra Modiās leadership.
He condemned the governmentās decision to induct 45 lateral entry officers across 24 ministries, stating, āModi-led NDA alliance governmentās decision to induct 45 lateral entry officers of the rank of Joint Secretaries, Directors, and Deputy Secretaries across 24 ministries is a clear attempt to infiltrate RSS personnel to further its agenda to subvert our Constitutional Scheme.ā
Yechuryās remarks highlight his concerns about the potential impact of these appointments on Indiaās democratic framework.
