Country must not deviate from secular ethos: Badal

Amritsar, Feb 13, 2020-

Akali supremo and five-time Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said here on Thursday those in power at the Centre and states should ensure that the country was run strictly in accordance with secular democratic ethos as enshrined in the Constitution.

Addressing a protest rally near here, Badal expressed grave concern over the social and political climate in the country.

Stating that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has failed to fulfil the promises made to the people, Badal said “keep your word or quit”.

“Any deviation from the sacred principles of secularism can only weaken our country. Those in power must work unitedly and tirelessly to safeguard, preserve and protect India as a secular democracy,” he said.

It was the legacy we inherited from the great Gurus, saints and seers, and we must preserve it for the coming generations, he said.

Striking an emotional chord, Badal said the governments and the political parties must work to bring Hindus and Muslims as well as others in an embrace of love and understanding.

“Hatred and bitterness should have no place in our public life. The atmosphere in the country should be such that minorities feel secure and respected as equal partners in the task of nation building,” the Akali leader said.

Citing his experience, Badal said anyone leaving the mother party could not find success. Leaders like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura had received every post they desired but still chose to back stab the party at the instance of anti-panthic forces, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal said the people would not allow Amarinder Singh’s move to break the SGPC succeed.

He also criticised the Chief Minister for fooling people by making false promises.  (Agency)
