Chandigarh, February 17, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
The ruling Congress party has gained heavily in Civic Polls at the cost of Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party.
Congress has won and gained a majority in 6 Municipal Corporations in the state including Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, Bathinda, Batala, Abohar, and Kapurthala.
However, in Moga, it fell short of a majority and will have to rely on the support of Independents.
From 349 of 350 total seats of seven corporations, the Congress managed to win 270, the Akali Dal won 33, BJP won 20 and AAP managed to win only 9 seats. 17 independents managed to win the elections in the 7 corporations.
In Abohar, the Congress has set a record of sorts, by winning the election for 49 out of 50 Wards. The one candidate in opposition will be of Shiromani Akali Dal. BJP and AAP could not manage to win even a single seat here.
In Bathinda, the Congress won 43 out of 50 seats. SAD managed to win the remaining seven while BJP and AAP could not manage to win even a single seat.
Batala voted 36 Congressmen to power. Akali Dal secured 6, BJP 4 and AAP 3 seats while one Independent also made it.
In Hoshiarpur, the Akali Dal could not win even one seat. Congress won 41, BJP 4 and AAP 2. Independents won 3 seats.
In Kapurthala Congress won 44 out of 49 while SAD won three. BJP and AAP didn’t win even a single seat. However, 2 Independents won their seats.
Moga was the only saving grace for Akali Dal where it won 15 seats out of a total 50. However, Congress remained ahead with 20 seats, 6 short of the majority. AAP won 4 while BJP managed to win only one seat. Ten independents won their seats and it seems that Congress will have to rely on their support to claim the majority in the house.
Pathankot helped BJP a bit as it won 11 seats here out of 50. Congress won 37, SAD only one and one independent candidate also made it to the house.
