Congress Reinstates Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary Amid Internal Party Dynamics

Chandigarh, June 2, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

In a significant political development, the Indian National Congress has reinstated Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, the MLA from Phillaur, into the party fold.

This decision was announced during the ‘Save the Constitution’ rally held in the Dakha Assembly segment near Ludhiana, marking a notable moment in Punjab’s political landscape.

Background of the Suspension

Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary faced suspension from the Congress in April 2024, just a month before the Parliamentary polls. The suspension was a consequence of his public dissent against the party’s decision to field former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as the candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat.

Chaudhary, along with his mother Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, had sought the ticket for the same constituency. Their opposition to Channi’s candidature led to a series of statements from Vikramjit that were deemed as anti-party activities, culminating in his suspension.

Family Dynamics and Political Realignments

The political scenario was further complicated when Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and extended her support to its candidate, Sushil Kumar Rinku.

This move was perceived as a significant shift, given the family’s longstanding association with the Congress. Despite these internal challenges, Channi secured a decisive victory in the Jalandhar MP polls.

Reinstatement and Its Implications

The revocation of Vikramjit’s suspension is seen as a strategic move by the Congress, especially in light of recent political realignments. The return of leaders like Kamaljit Karwal and Karan Warring during the Ludhiana West elections, facilitated by Channi, election in-charge Rana Gurjeet Singh, and party candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, indicates a broader strategy to consolidate party strength.

However, this decision has not been without contention. PPCC chief Raja Warring had previously objected to the rejoining of Karwal and Warring, citing their past actions against his Lok Sabha campaign in Ludhiana.

Vikramjit’s reinstatement, given his close association with the Warring and Bajwa faction, is perceived by many as a counterbalance to recent developments, potentially deepening the existing rift within the party’s state leadership.

Historical Context and Ongoing Tensions

The internal divisions within the Punjab Congress are not new. In April, leaders like Warring, Bajwa, and Capt Sandeep Sandhu organized a rally in Sultanpur Lodhi supporting ex-MLA Navtej Cheema.

This move was met with disapproval from Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh and his son, Rana Inder Partap Singh who is an independent MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi, highlighting the ongoing factionalism within the party.

The reinstatement of Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary underscores the Congress’s efforts to navigate internal challenges and present a united front. As the party gears up for future electoral battles, managing internal dynamics and fostering unity will be crucial for its success in Punjab’s complex political environment.
