Congress MPs Bajwa, Dullo protest anti-former ordinances at Parliament

New Delhi, Sept 14, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo, Members of Parliament representing the State of Punjab in the Rajya Sabha, Monday held a protest against the farming ordinances in front of the Parliament House.

Holding banners that read, ”Protect the Farmers of India. Revoke the Anti-Farmer Ordinances,” both the MPs stood in solidarity with the kisan jathebandhees across the nation who have been protesting against the ordinances promulgated by the Union Government which have deregulated agricultural markets.

Partap Singh Bajwa stated that the “Government’s intention was not to strengthen the rights of the farmers, but to remove the MSP system by other means.” The MP further added that these ordinances were an attempt to enact the reforms suggested by the Shanta Kumar Committee, which were rejected by farmers across India in 2015.

The Shanta Kumar Committee suggested that the Central Government end open procurement of paddy and wheat crops, and hand over the procurement processes to the States. Furthermore the Committee also suggested the dilution of the National Food Safety Act, 2013, to cover less people.

The two MPs made it clear that such moves would not be accepted especially in the State of Punjab. “The farming sector was the only one that grew during the lockdown when every other sector of the nation was affected. Rather than thanking our farmers, the Government is abandoning them,” added Mr. Bajwa.
