Congress appoints new General Secy, state in-charges to strengthen organisation

New Delhi, Jul 8, 2026
In a significant organisational reshuffle, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday announced fresh appointments of senior party functionaries as General Secretary and state in-charges with immediate effect.

The decision was taken by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to strengthen the party’s organisational structure in key states.

According to an official press statement issued, two important appointments were made.

Ghulam Ahmed Mir has been appointed as Congress General Secretary In-charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while Prakash Joshi has been named as Congress In-charge of West Bengal.

The appointments come at a time when the Congress is looking to revamp its presence in southern and eastern states.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been witnessing intense political activity, with the Congress attempting to rebuild its base in alliance with regional partners.

Similarly, West Bengal remains a crucial battleground where the Congress has been trying to regain lost ground against both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, a senior Congress leader from Jammu and Kashmir with vast administrative and political experience, is expected to bring fresh energy to the party’s efforts in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

His appointment is being seen as a strategic move to consolidate the party’s Southern outreach.

Prakash Joshi, a seasoned Congress leader known for his organisational skills, has been given the responsibility of West Bengal. His role will be critical as the Congress looks to expand its footprint in the state ahead of future Assembly elections.

In the official communication, the Congress said that these appointments have been made with immediate effect.

The press statement emphasised that Mallikarjun Kharge has entrusted these responsibilities to strengthen the Congress machinery at the state level.

The move is expected to be followed by further organisational decisions in other states in the coming weeks.

The Congress has been actively working on strengthening its cadre and leadership at various levels to prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.

These appointments are being seen as the first in a series of steps aimed at rejuvenating the party’s organisational structure across the country.(Agency)
