New Delhi, April 14, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress party has announced names of 6 candidates for Punjab Parliamentary elections.

THE LIST

Amritsar: Gurjit Singh Aujla

Jalandhar: Charanjit Singh Channi

Fatehgarh Sahib: Dr. Amar Singh

Bathinda: Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu

Sangrur: Sukhpal Singh Khaira

Patiala: Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi

Amritsar: Gurjit Singh Aujla
Aujla, who won twice on Congress ticket, and is a sitting MP from the holy city, has again been named to contest the party in Amritsar parliamentary constituency. AAP has fielded Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal while BJP has given ticket to Taranjit Singh Sandhu Samundari, a former Indian Ambassador to US. SAD has named Anil Joshi as its candidate. Joshi, a former BJP leader and a Cabinet Minister in Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government, quit his party to join SAD during farmers’ agitation.

Jalandhar: Charanjit Singh Channi
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will be party for Jalandhar-SC seat. The party has refused ticket to the family of late former MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary. His wife Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary fought the bye-election after Chaudhary expired while accompanying Rahul in Bharat Jodo Yatra. His son Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, a Congress MLA from Phillaur, had pitched for Congress ticket for his mother or himself but party preferred former CM Channi. Sensing that Channi was the preference of Congress top brass and the state leadership, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary resigned as Chief Whip of the party.

Fatehgarh Sahib: Dr. Amar Singh
Dr. Amar Singh, a former IAS officer and the sitting MP from Fatehgarh Sahib, has again been fielded to contest 2024 lok sabha elections. AAP has fielded, former MLA Gurpreet Singh Gopi, who recently quit Congress to join the party in presence of CM Bhagwant Mann.

Bathinda: Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu
Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu, a former four-time MLA from Talwandi Sabo, has been entrusted to contest Bathinda seat. Sidhu, who was a Congressman and considered very close to former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, had joined Shiromani Akali Dal but recently returned to Congress fold. It was in the air that Amrita Warring, wife of PCC Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring could be the choice for Bathinda seat but finally Sidhu bagged it. Harsimrat Kaur Badal who is the 3rd time MP from Bathinda. However, her name didn’t figure in first list of candidates announced by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. BJP is likely to field former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu who resigned and joined BJP recently. She is the daughter-in-law of former Punjab Minister and veteran Akali leader Sikander Singh Maluka.

Sangrur: Sukhpal Singh Khaira
Congress party has named Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira as party candidate from Sangrur. This comes as a surprise as Khaira belongs to District Kapurthala in Doaba region. He has remained tagged with Bholath Vidhan Sabha seat. Simranjit Singh Mann, the president of SAD (Amritsar) who won 2022 bye-election is the sitting MP. Heis also contesting again to retain the seat. AAP has named Cabinet Minister Meet Hayer as its candidate to reclaim the seat it lost to Mann.

Patiala: Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi
Congress has placed its bet on Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi, who recently joined the party. Dr. Gandhi, an AAP candidate, defeated Congress’ Preneet Kaur in 2014 General elections. However he fell apart with AAP supremo Kejriwal and party’s state leadership and fought 2019 elections as an independent and lost. Interestingly, Preneet Kaur is this time the candidate of the BJP. Akali Dal has fielded former CPS NK Sharma. Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Cabinet Minister Dr. Balbir Singh.
