The Centre has earmarked ₹2,010 crore in the Union Budget 2026 to strengthen judicial infrastructure and accelerate the digitisation of courts across the country, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal informed the Lok Sabha.
In a written reply, the minister said ₹810 crore has been allocated under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for the Development of Infrastructure Facilities for District and Subordinate Courts. An additional ₹1,200 crore has been provided for Phase III of the eCourts Project, which includes digitisation of courts along with training and capacity-building programmes.
Meghwal said budgetary allocations under both schemes are made in accordance with approved outlays and the availability of funds.
He, however, noted that the speed of case disposal depends on several factors, including the complexity of cases, quality of investigation, availability of evidence, effective presentation by advocates, timely court processes, participation of litigants and judicial procedures.
The minister said the Centre, in coordination with state governments and the judiciary, has undertaken several initiatives to improve access to justice and ensure faster and more effective disposal of cases.
He also highlighted the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), including exclusive POCSO courts, launched in October 2019 to expedite trials in rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases.
The scheme, which was earlier extended up to March 31, 2026 for establishing 790 FTSCs, has now been temporarily extended until September 30, 2026. As of April 30, a total of 775 Fast Track Special Courts, including 398 exclusive POCSO courts, were operational across 29 States and Union Territories, the minister said.
