Central Award for BRTS Amritsar reflective of pioneering work done by Sukhbir Badal: SAD

Chandigarh, November 16, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said the Award of Excellence given to the BRTS, Amritsar project was reflective of the pioneering work done by former Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to decongest as well as reduce pollution levels of the holy city.

In a statement here, SAD Spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema thanked the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for conferring ‘Award of excellence’ to the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), Amritsar, a prestigious project conceived and introduced by Mr Sukhbir Badal during the previous SAD- BJP government. He said such awards would go a long way in improving the quality of life in cities.

The former Deputy CM introduced the BRTS service in the holy city in December 2016. Dr Cheema said being a pioneering effort in this field, it had rapidly transformed the urban transport system in Amritsar. That is the reason why it has been chosen under the category of ‘Best Urban Mass Transit Project’.

The SAD Spokesman said despite the importance of the project for the holy city the Congress government had done its best to stall it.

He said the project was stalled for more than one year by former local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. “Sidhu even tried to take credit of this project by relaunching it in January 2019 after making relentless efforts to make BRTS service come to a standstill. He said even recently BRTS service was discontinued temporarily due to non-release of funds.

Dr Cheema asked the Captain Amarinder Singh led Congress government to focus on the welfare of the state and its people instead of using its energy to halt and delay projects initiated by the previous SAD-BJP government.

The ‘Award of excellence’ will be given to BRTS Amritsar project on November 17, 2019, at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow by the Deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
