Capt Amarinder extends support to Akal Takht Jathedar’s appeal to people to stay away from crowds

Chandigarh, March 7, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Calling for strict vigilance against the Coronavirus, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday extended support to the Akal Takht’s appeal to the people to stay away from crowds, while announcing a Group of Ministers (GoM) to review the situation triggered by the outbreak on a daily basis.

Given the growing CONVID – 19 threat, it was in the interest of the people to exercise caution and avoid large congregations, said the Chief Minister, urging them not to visit congested and crowded places.

The Chief Minister expressed his appreciation for the Akal Takht Acting Jathedar Giani Harpeet Singh for his appeal to the people not to take any risks with their health but to remain vigilant against the Coronavirus threat.

Captain Amarinder suggested that the auspicious Hola Mohalla may also be celebrated by paying obeisance in various gurdwaras and other places, in small numbers, instead of congregating in large numbers in one place. It was advisable, he said, to avoid taking unnecessary risks, while retaining the traditional spirit of the Hola Mohalla, for which the state government has already made extensive medical and health arrangements.

Captain Amarinder, who is personally monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis, has also constituted a 7-member GoM to oversee the preventive measures taken by the Health Department. The Chief Minister will himself hold a meeting every Monday to review and deliberate on the recommendations of the GoM, said an official spokesperson.

The Group of Ministers would be headed by Local Government Minister Brahm Mohindra. Medical Education and Research Minister OP Soni, Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Transport Minister Razia Sultana, Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, School Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla and Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu are the Group members.

The Group has been mandated to submit a comprehensive report to the Chief Minister after monitoring the entire situation on day to day basis.

In addition, the Health Department will release a press bulletin every day at 5 pm, based the suggestions and decisions of the GoM, said the spokesperson.

The Department has already directed a series of measures to prevent the outbreak, screen suspected cases, and check the spread of the disease. Hospitals are on high alert, with specialized arrangements to tackle any exigency arising out of the crisis, which has engulfed the entire globe.
