Capt Amarinder, Badals responsible for bringing education in Punjab govt schools to brink: Bhagwant Mann

Chandigarh, July 15, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab state President and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann and State Core Committee Chairman and MLA Principal Budh Ram, while felicitating the students, their parents and teachers along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Education Minister Nanish Sisodia for the excellent results the government schools in Delhi had secured, sending out an advisory to Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to learn from the Delhi model of education so that that the rundown school education system in Punjab schools could be brought back on the track.

In a statement issued from party headquarters in Chandigarh on Wednesday, Bhagwant Mann said that since 1980, both the Congress and SAD-BJP governments had ruined the government school education system in Punjab under a deep-rooted conspiracy.

He added that when the population of Punjab in 1980 was around 1 crore 67 lakh, there were about 40 lakh students studying in government schools in Punjab, which had dwindled to 22 lakh while the population had swollen more than 3 crore, holding both Captain and Badals responsible for the same.

Mann said that since 2016 to date, the results of Class XII of government schools in Delhi had been 88.9 per cent, 90 per cent, 94 percent and now the recently announced 2019 results had been 97.92 per cent, respectively, which was the highest in the country’s 70-year education history.

On the other hand, Mann said the ‘drop-out rate’ in Punjab schools was worrisome, adding that more than 2 lakh children were enrolled in government schools in the first standard, while only 1.5 lakh students had reached the 12th standard, which, Mann said, was a matter of grave concern.

The AAP MP said that there were countless schools in Punjab where there were no teachers and in others there were no students. As per the records available, Mann said there was not a single teacher in 50 schools and one teacher in more than 150 schools, saying there were hundreds of such schools that existed across the state, holding both Captain Badals responsible for the same.

Mann lamented that 50,000 teachers were working on a meager salary of only Rs 7,000 per month, while most of the qualified teachers in the state were struggling for jobs. On the other hand, the Delhi government had not only increased the salaries of teachers but had also sent them to various developed countries, including the United States, for training.

Principal Budhram said that the results in Delhi had proved that if the children were given equal opportunities, those coming from humble backgrounds could add up to the excellent result tally. He said that Punjab government should increase budget allocation for education like the Delhi government, which he said currently 8 per cent in Punjab and 26 per cent in Delhi.
