Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday recalled the trauma endured by his family during Partition, saying he grew up with a deeply personal understanding of the suffering of people who were uprooted from their homes and separated from their land.
Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Puri said the Partition of India remained one of the most brutal and painful human tragedies in history, with its impact continuing to be felt across generations.
In a post on social media platform X, Puri said, “The Partition of our country will always be remembered as one of the most brutal, painful and violent human tragedies to unfold.”
He said he was born to parents who had experienced the horrors of Partition and carried its scars throughout their lives.
“Born to parents who bore the brunt and scars of Partition, I have grown up with a deeply personal understanding of the anguish of those who were uprooted from their homes and torn away from their land under the most harrowing circumstances,” Puri said.
Remembering those who lost their lives during the violence and upheaval, the Union Minister paid tribute to survivors, including his parents and other members of his family, who were forced to leave everything behind.
He recalled that several people, including his father, arrived in India with little more than the clothes they were wearing.
Despite the enormous hardship, Puri said, his father and other survivors demonstrated “indomitable courage” and rebuilt their lives from scratch.
“Their stories are a poignant reminder of the extraordinary resilience and strength of ordinary people who endured unimaginable suffering,” he said.
Puri urged people to remember the pain of Partition with empathy and honour the resilience of survivors while ensuring that the events and suffering associated with that period are not forgotten.
Partition accompanied India’s independence on August 15, 1947, but the division of the subcontinent triggered widespread violence and displacement, uprooting millions of people and separating families and communities.
Puri said Partition was not simply the drawing of a boundary but an upheaval that destroyed homes, shattered memories, broke relationships and wounded a centuries-old shared culture.
