With the motive to provide much needed respite to Safai Sewaks (Sanitation Workers), National Safai Karamchari Commission’s Member Anjana Pawar today met district officials and Safai Sewak Union Representatives together here at MC Bhawan in the presence of MC Commissioner Kamal Kumar Garg and ADC (D) Himanshu Aggarwal to assess the ground realities being faced by Safai Sewaks.
Extending Gratitude towards Prime Minister Narinder Singh Modi for her appointment as member of the commission, Ms. Pawar said that the aim of the meeting to instantly resolve the issues of Safai Sewaks as all the concerned officials called upon.
Terming as the need of the hour, she stated that the word Sewerman should be abolished as this is inhuman and clear violation of Constitutional right of equality. She suggested to use other words such as Safai Sewak instead of Sewerman.
Enquiring about the total vacancies of Sewermen, the Member also enquired about problems being faced by Safai Sewaks in other Municipal Councils of the district. She also insisted better and healthy atmosphere for safai Sewaks and proper vaccination as the Safai Sewaks are the most vulnerable of diseases. ‘’Medical check-up should be a regular feature and it should be conducted in every three months’’, she added.
Commission’s Member Anjana Pawar said that accommodation should be provided under Safai Karamchari Awas Yojna to Safai Sewaks. She also accounted other facilities like Bathroom facilities especially for ladies and two dedicated changing rooms in every ward, which would be used as single coordination point for them.
Meanwhile, Union representatives have demanded collector rate for Safai Sewaks should be given as recommended by Labour department. On the issue, the member assured them to meet all legitimate demands and instructed MC Officials to provide breather.
Among others who were present on the occasion included ACA (GMADA) Daman Mann, District Welfare Officer Ravinderpal Singh Sandhu, DSP Jatinderpal Singh, XEN Water Supply and Sanitation Gurparkash Singh, XEN MC Harpreet Singh and Pawan Godial of Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation.
