Masked armed robbers in Punjab looted 25 lakh rupees from a private bank in broad daylight today at gunpoint.
Five bike-riding robbers fled away with the booty and DVRs of the CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the bank.
Robbers struck at the HDFC Bank branch in the village Gopalpura under Amritsar Rural Police jurisdiction at about 3.15 PM on Wednesday.
Five armed robbers who came on two motorcycles pulled down the shutter outside the bank and took the female cashier of the bank at gunpoint forcing her to part with cash around Rs.25 lakh.
The robbers also cornered the Branch Manager and managed to get away with two DVRs of CCTVs installed in the premises of the bank. The robbers carried out the entire operation within 10 to 15 minutes.
Interestingly, there was an unarmed ‘security guard’ inside the bank at the time of the robbery. He could do nothing as he did not have a weapon. CCTVs are installed in and outside the bank premises and there was a siren system.
Charanjit Singh, SSP Amritsar Rural, who visited the spot to take a first-hand view, said that according to the cash transaction level of the bank, it should have two security guards but there was only one, and that too without a weapon. He claimed that the police would soon be able to trace the robbers and arrest them.
Notably, the branch of the bank is located on a link road only about 100 meters from the Amritsar-Jammu National Highway.
It has also been learned that a laptop and the mobile phones of the employees of the bank were also taken away by the robbers. However, they threw the devices outside the bank before escaping.
