Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, today called upon the people of Punjab to rise above political divides and unite in the spirit of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s timeless teachings. Addressing the special Vidhan Sabha session convened at Anandpur Sahib to commemorate the 350th year of the supreme martyrdom of the Ninth Guru, Bajwa said that no legacy in world history shines brighter than that of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji—who willingly accepted death to safeguard the rights, beliefs, and freedoms of others.
Bajwa said Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s decision to stand firm in the face of a despotic Mughal ruler remains a defining example of moral courage, selflessness, and the defence of human dignity. “Guru Sahib’s unparalleled sacrifice for an egalitarian and just society, and his unwavering commitment to pluralism, is not bound by time. It is a timeless beacon that continues to guide our collective conscience,” he said.
The Leader of the Opposition emphasised that at a moment when Punjab faces political, constitutional, and federal challenges, the message of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji carries even greater significance. He stated that the Union Government led by the BJP must introspect and immediately stop “pricking Punjabis” by weakening the federal structure, disturbing established conventions, and attempting to undermine Punjab’s rights. Bajwa cautioned that repeated unilateral decisions by the Centre only fuel mistrust and disrupt the delicate balance of India’s federal framework.
“We must remember that Punjab has always stood tall to defend freedom—be it religious, social, or constitutional. The Centre must not test the patience of Punjabis by adopting policies that dilute federal principles or target the dignity of our institutions,” Bajwa said.
Concluding his address, Bajwa urged all political parties to embrace the universal values embodied by Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji—courage, compassion, equality, and defence of the vulnerable. “If we walk the path laid down by Guru Sahib, Punjab will remain strong, united, and unwavering in its pursuit of justice and harmony,” he said.
