Senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Leader of Opposition (LoP), Harpal Singh Cheema, took Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President and MP Sukhbir Singh Badal upfront, saying that their pseudo love for the Panth and Punjab become conspicuous only when they are out of power.
Whenever they were out of power, they din’t miss any opportunity to harp of the old tune – Punjab’s water share, its claim on Chandigarh and the Panth in danger rant and so on and so forth, he said. But the people of the state were well aware of their cheap gimmicks to entice them and stay relevant in politics.
Cheema said in a statement issued by party headquarters in Chandigarh on Tuesday that Badal and Captain were never concerned about the interests of Punjab and its people, stating that had they being a tad seized of the matter, Chandigarh would have been Punjab’s, Punjab would not have been deprived of its water share, the Punjabi-speaking areas would have been transferred to Punjab and that farmers of the state would not have to face starvation due to heavy indebness on their head, leading them to commit suicides.
The AAP leader said that the Akali Dal government in the state had ruled over Punjab for more than two decades since 1966, with Parkash Singh Badal as the Chief Minister for close to seventeen long years.
He questioned Sukhbir Singh Badal as to what did he do about the issues concerning Punjab and its people while he was the Deputy Chief Minister for a span of eight years or so. He added what he (Sukhbir Badal) had done to resolve the pending issues concerning Punjab and what his wife and union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal was doing in this regard?
Ridiculing his statement on the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab, Cheema said that he was behaving as if they were in the opposition, instead of broaching the issue with the alliance partners at the centre, stating that the Badals should have the issued relating to Punjab settled once and for all or pull out of the alliance, instead of making such absurd political statements every now and then to show their ‘sham’ love for Punjab and the ‘Panth’, Cheema said
