Australian Sikh Community Decries Extremist Disruption of Peaceful Nagar Kirtan Parade in New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand, Dec 22, 2025(Yes Punjab News)

UNITED SIKHS joins the Australian Sikh Community in expressing serious concern over the disruption of the peaceful Nagar Kirtan parade in New Zealand on December 20, 2025. The procession, a permitted and lawful gathering, was targeted by right‑wing extremists in an attempt to intimidate the community and silence its voice.

In a statement, Gurvinder Singh, UNITED SIKHS Director (Australia and New Zealand), emphasized: “We strongly condemn the actions of right‑wing extremists who disrupted the peaceful Nagar Kirtan in New Zealand. Sikh gatherings are rooted in seva, humility, and unity, not provocation or hate. Any attempt to intimidate a faith community strikes at the very values of peace, mutual respect, and freedom that bind a democratic society together. Hate has no place on our streets, and we stand united against it.”

The Nagar Kirtan is a cherished Sikh tradition, where the community comes together to sing hymns, share food, and walk in unity through the streets. It is a celebration of faith that welcomes everyone, regardless of background, and embodies the Sikh commitment to peace and inclusivity.

That this lawful, permitted event was disrupted is deeply troubling. Families, elders, and children who came together in devotion were met with intimidation, undermining both public safety and the spirit of community cohesion. Such actions run counter to New Zealand’s proud tradition of diversity and inclusivity, and they threaten the very fabric of democratic society.

UNITED SIKHS calls on authorities to investigate thoroughly and ensure accountability. Freedom of religion and expression must be exercised with mutual respect and responsibility, not as a shield for harassment or provocation. Safeguards must be strengthened to ensure that minority communities can gather in peace, especially when events are organized lawfully and with full compliance to regulations. We also urge all communities to engage in respectful dialogue and reaffirm their commitment to interfaith harmony.

UNITED SIKHS will continue to advocate for dignity, justice, and the right of all faiths to gather in peace,” Singh added.
