Ask DGP to take immediate action in cases of Police atrocities, Congress ‘goondaism’: Majithia to Amarinder

Chandigarh, April 18, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today urged chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to direct the State DGP to take immediate action in cases of police atrocities and Congress goondaism to send out a clear signal that no one was above the law.

In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said a video had surfaced recently of Khanna in which a father – son duo and a Scheduled Caste person were stripped and paraded in the police station.

He said despite the fact that the video was in public domain, no action had been taken against the SHO who was responsible for this atrocity. “A father was disrobed in front of his son. The son later cut off his hair. Who will be responsible if he takes any extreme action tomorrow”.

Mr Majithia also highlighted that the police swung into action immediately when ASI Harjit Singh was attacked in Patiala but now when a Gursikh had been tortured and his religious symbols disrespected no action is being taken in the matter. “We demand that a case should be registered against the SHO responsible for this crime under Section 295-A as well as the SC Prevention of Atrocities Act and he be arrested and dismissed from service.I would also like to bring to your notice that no action is being taken against the khanna SHO because he is being protected by the congress legislator & leaders.

Mr Majitha also urged the chief minister to ensure law and order was maintained at all cost and that Congress goons were not allowed to take it in their own hands. He said the recent manner in which one Hemraj, who was the nephew of Balachaur legislator Darshan Lal, had got away with liquor smuggling was very demoralising for the society at large.

“Liquor shops are closed across the State but Hemraj was selling liquor in violation of the law and yet he has not been arrested nor any case registered against him. He said Hemraj’s men when caught smuggling liquor downed the shutters and when the shutters were broken down even threatened the SDM and other civil officials with dire consequences besides attacking them. “Despite this a case under Section 307 has not been registered against the goons”, he added.

The Akali leader also highlighted how the common man was being persecuted while bringing up the atrocity committed against a dairy owner in Majitha. He said a graduate who was also a SC was beaten up and taken to the police station and tortured there illegally for six hours solely because he said he was covered under the essential services and was taking fodder for his cattle.

He said the boy had highlighted the atrocities committed against him but the police force refused to take action against their own. “This is a very dangerous trend and all police personnel persecuting the common man should be dealt with strictly”, he added.

The SAD leader requested the chief minister to take strict action in all three cases. “The civil society is passing through a very difficult phase. The government must act promptly to end police highhandedness and goondaism or else the people will lose faith in the system which would have very dangerous consequences”, he added.
