Six world records were rewritten in the men’s 70kg and 75kg weightlifting finals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Saturday, with DPR Korea and Indonesia claiming one gold medal each.
Ri Won-ju of DPR Korea won the men’s 70kg title after setting world records in the clean and jerk and overall total. He lifted 198kg in the clean and jerk and finished with a record total of 349kg.
Japan’s Masanori Miyamoto took silver after setting a world record in the snatch with a lift of 154kg. Ri trailed Miyamoto by three kilograms after the snatch but produced a decisive clean and jerk performance to finish seven kilograms ahead overall.
Philippines lifter Albert Ian Delos Santos claimed bronze with a total of 324kg.
Delos Santos comes from a weightlifting family, with his father, a former Philippines national team lifter, serving as his first coach. His sister also competed at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
“My sister competed at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, and now being here is like a full circle. And my dad back in the 90s, this is a legacy given to me,” Delos Santos said.
In the men’s 75kg final, Indonesia’s Rahmat Erwin Abdullah also produced two world records, lifting 206kg in the clean and jerk and recording a total of 366kg to secure the gold medal.
DPR Korea’s Ri Chong-song set a world record in the snatch with a 162kg lift but failed with both his second and third clean-and-jerk attempts. He finished with the bronze medal.
Thailand’s Weeraphon Wichuma won silver, missing out on the gold by just one kilogram.
“I’m happy for silver. It’s so good,” Wichuma said after the competition. “The level here was quite high; this is a competitive field full of good competitors.”
The women’s 69kg and 77kg weightlifting finals are scheduled for Sunday.
