Amrik Singh Aliwal assumes charge as Chairman of Sugarfed

Punjab Cooperation and Jails Minister Mr. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa today asserted that the Cooperative Department has prepared a comprehensive plan to increase 100 quintals per acre more sugarcane yield to further bolster the income of the farmers.

He was speaking after inducted Mr. Amrik Singh Aliwal as Chairman of The Punjab State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited, along with Mr. Bharat Inder Singh Chahal, Advisor to Chief Minister, Punjab, former Minister Mr. Malkeet Singh Dakha and other senior Congress leaders, here at Sugarfed Office, phase-2, Mohali.

Mr. Randhawa informed that Sugarfed has been able to provide farmers with a plan to increase the income of sugarcane growers in the state.

“Under this time-bound program, certified seeds of advanced and high yield varieties would be provided to the farmers”, he said, adding that every co-operative sugar mill of the state will produce high quality sugarcane seed in nurseries and provide to the farmers. With these approved seeds, efforts will be made to increase 100 quintals per acre more sugarcane yield, which will enhance farmer’s income up to Rs.30,000 per acre.

Cooperation Minister further said all the cooperative sugar mills have been asked to achieve the given target within two years. Apart from this, the process has been initiated to establish a unique institute at Kalanaur, district Gurdaspur to impart training of new techniques to the cultivators besides providing them with approved seeds.

After inducting Mr. Amrik Singh Aliwal as Chairman, Mr. Randhawa and Mr. Bharat Inder Singh Chahal expressed hope that Aliwal would perform his duties with utmost dedication.

Speaking to the media persons, Chairman Mr. Aliwal said that he was thankful to the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Cooperation & Jails Minister Mr. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for showing confidence upon him. He further said that he would fulfill all the responsibility he was entrusted with.

Starting his political journey as Sarpanch in 1979, Mr. Aliwal had served continuously for 15 years as Sarpanch of village Aliwal. He was elected Member Parliament from Ludhiana in 1996 and 1998 respectively. He became the director of Cooperative Bank Ludhiana in 1985 and chairman of Punjab State Agro Industries Corporation Limited in 2012. Mr. Aliwal had also served as member in several advisory committees of the union Government.

Responding to queries, he said that the Sugarfed is directly related with the farmers. Therefore, he will try his best to keep the interests of the sugarcane growers in order to modernize the cooperative sugar mills and increase the income of the sugarcane growers.

On this occasion, Chairman Punjab State Medium Industries Development Corporation Mr. Amarjit Singh Tikka, Sugarfed MD Mr. Puneet Goyal, Director Punjab State Cooperative Bank Ltd Mr. Rachhpal Singh Talwara, Chairman Market Committee Sidhwan Bet Mr. Swaran Singh, Councilor Municipal Corporation Ludhiana Mr. Pal Singh Grewal and officers and employees of the department were present.
