Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan recently recalled an awkward moment from the time he was taken for emergency surgery, admitting that he made what he later described as one of the “silliest remarks” to renowned surgical oncologist Dr P. Jagannath.
Bachchan shared the anecdote on Friday while attending the launch of Dr Jagannath’s memoir, Dr. Blue, alongside his wife Jaya Bachchan and legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
Recounting his first meeting with the surgeon, Bachchan said he was admitted to hospital after experiencing an emergency and was initially examined by doctors. A doctor friend, however, was not satisfied with the results and sought another opinion.
According to Bachchan, the doctor discovered an issue that had not been detected earlier and the medical team subsequently told him that surgery was required immediately.
The actor recalled that it was already past midnight and he initially wanted to postpone the procedure until morning because he was in pain and wanted to sleep. However, doctors advised him that the surgery had to be performed that night.
As he was taken into the operating theatre, Bachchan said he noticed Dr Jagannath approaching him wearing blue surgical attire.
“I said, ‘Excuse me, how many times have you done this?’” Bachchan recalled, describing the question as one of the “silliest remarks” he had ever made.
The veteran actor said he later regretted asking the question because of Dr Jagannath’s standing and reputation as a surgeon.
Bachchan has spoken publicly about several health challenges over the years. He suffered a serious injury while shooting for Coolie in the 1980s, an incident that triggered widespread concern and prayers for his recovery.
He has also previously spoken about a liver-related health issue, including a statement that his liver was functioning at a fraction of its normal capacity.
