Akal Takht Summons Punjab Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Director Jawant Singh Zafar

Amritsar, July 23, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

In a significant development, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, Officiating Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, has formally summoned Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains and Jaswant Singh Zafar, Director of the Punjab Language Department, in connection with a controversial event held in Srinagar to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadar Ji.

The summons comes in response to widespread outrage among the Sikh community over the nature of the event, which reportedly included songs, dance, and entertainment, deemed inappropriate for an occasion of solemn religious significance.

According to Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh, despite the seriousness of the issue, no clarification or public apology has been offered by either official to address the concerns and sentiments of the Sikh Panth. “When you hold a constitutional position, the expectation for accountability is even greater,” he said, adding that the officials’ silence only compounds the community’s discontent.

The duo has been directed to appear before the collective assembly of the five Singh Sahiban on August 1, 2025, at Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar, where they will be expected to present their explanation.

In a related development, singer Bir Singh, who also faced criticism for participating in the event, appeared before the Akal Takht and tendered an apology, which will be reviewed by the religious body during the upcoming deliberations.

Bagicha Singh, in-charge of the Sri Akal Takht Secretariat, confirmed that formal summon notices have been issued to both Harjot Singh Bains and Jaswant Singh Zafar.

The August 1 session will focus on Panthic and religious concerns, and the Sikh leadership is expected to make a firm decision on the matter, underscoring the community’s commitment to preserving the sanctity and legacy of its Gurus.
