Afghan Sikhs thank Sukhbir Badal, Harsimrat for passage of Citizenship Bill

A delegation of Afghanistani Sikhs led by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Mr. Manjinder Singh Sirsa today met the Shiromani Akali Dal President Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Minister Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal to thank them for getting the Citizenship Amendment Act passed in Parliament.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal said that he thanks almighty and congratulates Sikhs from Afghanistan and other countries that after years of struggle finally this act has been enacted granting citizenship to Sikhs who had come to country almost 30 years ago.

He said that he is thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the enactment of this act. He said that the SAD led by Prakash Singh Badal had struggled a lot for getting this act enacted and finally their efforts have bear fruit.

Mr. Badal said that those criticizing this act today, he want to tell them that it is easy to criticize anything but what we had suffered all these years only the Sikh community know. He said that Afghan Sikhs were happy in their country and were having flourishing businesses before coming of Taliban.

He said that they were forced to left the country and come to India. He said that he had also told in the Parliament that 80 thousand Sikhs have been living in country since last 30 years without citizenship.

He said that in some countries it takes almost less than two years to get citizenship and India needs to show brave heart to take this decision. He said that he is thankful to Modi Government which has taken big decision. He said that religion left behind should also be included in the act.

On the occasion he announced that the SAD will take up the issue in Afghanistani Sikhs will face any problem in Punjab or elsewhere getting citizenship. He said that in Delhi the DSGMC and the SAD will take up the matter if and when required.

On the occasion Union Minister Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that Guru Sahib has blessed us that this bill has now become an Act. She said that these Sikhs left their country only to save their religion.

He said that those who are opposing the Act today, they should realize on how they would have felt had they been in place of these Afghan Sikhs. He said that with the blessings of almighty the decision has come in the 550th birthday year of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

She said that Modi government has taken a number of decision favouring Sikhs including Kartarpur Sahib corridor, 550th birthday celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev ji and giving punishment to the guilty of 1984 Sikh Genocide.

She said that now the decision on citizenship amendment Act will give huge benefit to Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. She said that she is thankful to PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shan and specially Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the same.

On the occasion the DSGMC President Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the credit for passage of Citizenship Amendment Act goes to the SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. He said that the SAD is representative body of the Sikhs in the country and has always stood with the community and will continue to do so in future also.
