Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state President and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann has strongly opposed the decision of the state government to abolish thousands of posts in the Water Resources Department, saying that Punjab was already facing major challenges due to the looming water crisis, while the government in the saddle was making suicidal decisions to add to the woes.
He said that the Cabinet taken a decision to reduce the sanctioned posts in the Water Resources Department from 24,263 to 15,606 in the name of reorganisation, by merging it with the Mines, Geology Departments on the pretext of saving Rs 71 crore, which, he said was an anti-employment decision to allow perpetuating the contractual and outsource channels by imposing a cut on the government jobs, which reflected the bankruptcy of the Captain government.
In a statement issued from party headquarters on Thursday, Bhagwant Mann said that the Capt. Amarinder Singh government had joined hands with the mafia lords by merging the Department of the Water Resources with the Department Mines and Geology, which was a mere a ploy to impose a cut on the sanctioned posts in the name of reorganisation, allegedly under pressure from the mafia active in the state.
Mann added that government officials and employees of the Irrigation, Drainage and Mines Departments were being rendered jobless, which was a well thought-out move aimed at perpetuating the contract and outsourcing system in the state.
According to Bhagwant Mann, Capt. Amarinder Singh, who had had peddled promises of ghar-ghar naukri, and to rationalize vacancies in the Water Resources Department, was instead abolishing the sanctioned posts now under pressure of mighty mafia raj.
He said the need of the hour was to address the shortage of field staff in the department to curb the declining ground water level as Punjab was in the midst of dire straits due to inefficiency of the governments, due rampant corruption and lack of accountability.
Mann said address the growing water crisis, the Irrigation and Drainage Departments could play a pivotal role in rainwater harvesting and recharging projects from drip irrigation projects to homes on to the farms, alleging the Captain’s government had been laggard in terms of approach and decision of making.
Taking a pots shot at Captain Bhagwant Mann said that the his government could also go to the extent of setting up Water Regulatory Commission to ‘accommodate’ the most favoured blue-eyed boys, like the former Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh, by cutting on the job opportunities for the qualified and competent engineers from humble backgrounds, instead of increasing them.
The AAP MP said that if the people of Punjab gave an opportunity to AAP to form the government in 2022, it would take reverse all such anti-people, anti-Punjab and anti-employment decisions taken the Captain and the previous Badal governments, and initiate pro-youth and pro-Punjab decisions.
